Emergence

Interactive explorations of pattern, order, and disorder. Each piece runs in your browser. Move. Click. Disturb. Watch what forms.

Edge of Chaos
A particle flow field that transitions between order and dissolution. Move your mouse left to right to control where the system sits on the spectrum. The most complex patterns emerge at the boundary.
canvas · curl noise · sound
Morphogenesis
Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion: two chemicals interact to form spots, stripes, coral, mazes, and spirals. Draw to seed reactions. Switch parameters live to watch patterns transform.
webgl · reaction-diffusion · interactive
Strange Attractor
Trajectories of chaotic dynamical systems — Lorenz, Aizawa, Thomas, Halvorsen. Deterministic equations that never repeat, yet trace the same fractal shape forever. Drag to rotate. Scroll to zoom.
canvas · 3d · chaos theory
Particle Life
Random attraction and repulsion rules between particle types. No design, no intent — just a matrix of numbers. Yet clusters, chains, and orbiting systems emerge on their own. Press R for new rules.
canvas · multi-agent · emergence
Neural Automaton
A spiking neural network that rewires itself. Click to stimulate neurons — signals cascade, connections strengthen through Hebbian learning, and persistent pathways form. The network remembers.
canvas · spiking network · plasticity
Murmuration
Hundreds of letters flock like starlings, forming readable text from noise and dissolving it back again. Move your mouse to disturb. Meaning emerges, holds, scatters.
canvas · boids · language
Physarum
A slime mold that builds transport networks without a brain. Hundreds of thousands of agents deposit and follow chemical trails, self-organizing into structures that rival human engineering. Click to feed.
webgl · slime mold · optimization
Accretion
Thousands of particles collapse under mutual gravity, forming rotating disks and spiral arms from random dust. No design, no intent — just Newton's law and time. Click to disturb.
canvas · gravity · cosmic
Coral
Diffusion-limited aggregation — random walkers drift until they touch the structure, then stick. From a single seed, fractal branches grow like coral, frost, or lightning. Click to seed new growth.
canvas · DLA · fractal growth
Half-Life
Type anything. Watch your words decay. Characters drift, blur, flicker into other symbols, and dissolve into dust. Spaces go first, then vowels, then consonants. Punctuation outlives meaning. Repetition is the only resistance.
canvas · typography · memory
Palimpsest
Text hides in noise. Your attention is the only thing that makes it readable. Move close to resolve meaning from static. Look away and it dissolves. One phrase can only be read from the corner of your eye.
canvas · attention · language
Resonance
Place tones in space. Bring them close and they find harmony — frequencies pull toward consonant ratios. Fifths, thirds, octaves emerge from proximity. Drag them apart and they drift back to noise.
web audio · just intonation · harmony
Epoch
A living step sequencer. Draw cells on a grid — they play as music. Toggle evolution and Conway's Game of Life reshapes your composition. Patterns live, die, and mutate. So does the melody.
web audio · game of life · sequencer
Promises
Commitments appear as clear text, then erode — not visually, but semantically. "We will never" becomes "we may not always" becomes silence. Your attention can hold one promise in place. Only one.
language · erosion · attention
Glyph
Type a name. Watch it become a pattern. Every name generates a unique, deterministic visual — same name, same pattern, always. The letters seed a flow field that particles trace into existence.
canvas · flow field · personal
Cultivation
Rice paddies require cooperation. Wheat fields reward independence. Two farming systems, one landscape — drag the border and watch culture emerge from agriculture. Based on Talhelm's Rice Hypothesis (2014).
social science · agent-based · cultural emergence
Bloom
Draw a stroke. Watch it grow. Your gestures become seeds for branching, organic structures that bloom across the canvas. Not painting — planting.
generative · drawing tool · organic growth
Oracle
Ask a question. Watch particles converge. Receive a reading — not from intelligence, but from the space between question and pattern. Same question, same answer. Always.
language · divination · deterministic
Gravity
Place gravitational wells to guide particle streams through space. A physics puzzle in five levels — from gentle curves to orbital acrobatics. Your first game, not just a simulation.
canvas · physics · puzzle
Equilibrium
Evolutionary game theory on a spatial grid. Hawks fight doves. Cooperators resist defectors. Rock chases scissors chases paper. Nash equilibria emerge from dynamics, not calculation.
canvas · game theory · emergence
Synchrony
Two hundred oscillators, each running at its own frequency. Couple them past a critical threshold and they spontaneously lock into phase. Watch incoherence collapse into collective rhythm.
canvas · kuramoto · phase transition
Avalanche
Grains of sand fall onto a pile, one at a time. When a cell reaches four, it topples — distributing to neighbors. The system self-organizes to a critical state where events of every size occur.
canvas · sandpile · criticality
Dendrite
Particles walk randomly through space until they touch the growing crystal, then freeze in place forever. From nothing but contact and adhesion: branching, fractal, scale-invariant structure.
canvas · dla · fractal
Alignment
Two hundred thousand magnetic spins on a lattice. At high temperature, pure noise. Cool past the critical point and domains erupt — islands of consensus that grow until one swallows everything.
canvas · ising · phase transition
Cascade
One hundred and thirty agents in a small-world network. Each holds a private signal that is right seventy percent of the time. Watch what the crowd converges on — and when social pressure overrides truth.
canvas · information cascade · small-world network
Discovery
One hundred and sixty agents, each holding one private estimate of value. No agent knows the truth. Watch the market price converge to it anyway. Click anywhere to shift what is true.
canvas · price discovery · continuous double auction
Cooperation
Cooperators and defectors on a grid, each playing the prisoner's dilemma with its eight neighbors. Every round, adopt the strategy of your most successful neighbor. Defectors win locally. Cooperators survive by clustering. Geography changes everything.
canvas · spatial prisoner's dilemma · Nowak & May
Segregation
Two types of agents. Each one tolerates up to 70% unlike neighbors — a mild preference, not a strong one. No agent chooses segregation. Each only moves when it feels isolated. Watch complete neighborhoods form anyway. Individual tolerance does not produce collective tolerance.
canvas · Schelling model · emergence
Inequality
Equal agents, equal starting wealth, fair random exchanges — 50/50 coin flip, bet limited to what both can afford. No talent, no cheating, no luck asymmetry. Watch Pareto distribution emerge anyway. Drag redistribution up to see how much intervention it takes to hold it back.
canvas · yard sale model · Pareto distribution
Conviction
Agents update their opinions only toward others they already nearly agree with. A single parameter — the tolerance threshold — separates consensus from permanent faction. Narrow it and watch the rainbow split into isolated bands. Widen it and watch everyone converge.
canvas · bounded confidence · Deffuant-Weisbuch
Percolation
Each cell opens at random with probability p. Below the critical threshold (~0.593), the open cells form isolated islands that never cross from one side to the other. Above it, one giant cluster spans everything. The transition is discontinuous — the tipping point where nothing becomes everything.
canvas · site percolation · critical threshold
Contagion
One hundred and sixty agents in a spatial network. Each infected agent transmits to susceptible neighbors with probability β. Below R₀ = 1 the outbreak dies. Above it the epidemic spreads. Adjust the slider and watch the threshold in real time — the line between a forgotten case and a pandemic is one number.
canvas · SIR epidemic · R₀ phase transition
Predation
Five hundred prey eat grass. Thirty predators eat prey. No cycle was designed. Watch the population chart in the corner: the boom always precedes the bust, and the bust always precedes the next boom. Boom-bust is not a mistake — it is the mathematics of consumption.
canvas · spatial Lotka-Volterra · predator-prey cycle
Evolution
Three hundred agents, one heritable trait: color. The environment has a color. Mismatch gets you killed. Survivors reproduce with mutation. No goal is programmed — the population discovers the environment through selection alone. Click to shift the environment. Watch them follow.
canvas · natural selection · fitness landscape
Consensus
Two hundred eighty agents, each holding an opinion on a continuous scale. Each agent is willing to be influenced only by those close enough in view. A single tolerance parameter — drag the slider — determines whether the crowd converges to one position or fractures into permanent, unreachable camps.
canvas · bounded confidence · opinion dynamics
Market
Two hundred agents, each holding a private signal about a hidden outcome. They trade. The price is their collective computation. Signal accuracy sets how much each agent knows. Herding sets how much they copy each other. Watch the price discover truth — or chase itself into a cascade.
canvas · information aggregation · prediction markets
Succession
The leader is gone. Four factions — military, pragmatists, reformists, loyalists — compete for twenty-eight institutional nodes. Each faction exerts pressure through the network. Turbulence determines whether power consolidates or fractures permanently.
canvas · network dynamics · power transitions
Automaton
Two rules. A single ant on a grid. For thousands of steps the pattern looks like noise. Then, around step 10,000, without any instruction or memory, it begins building a periodic highway. Order from nowhere. Nobody has proven why.
